Ipanema Slippers

If you live in Hawai’i, you can pretty much guarantee that you wear slippers on your feet almost every day. So why not wear ones that are soft and comfy, stylish and eco-friendly? Did you even know those existed? They do, and they are now available at a. ell atelier, in the shop and online.

Ipanema is a company based in Brazil, named after the iconic beach made famous by a song. Their slipper line is made of a patented PVC material called Medflex, which is soft and flexible,  easy on the toes and feet. There is a plethora of vibrant colors and patterns, as well as solid black and browns.

Model Gisele Bundchen, a Brazil native as well as a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nation’s Environmental Program, joined the Ipanema team in 2002. Bundchen stands behind the company, whose practices include:

  • Using 100% recyclable PVC instead of rubber
  • Recycling 99% of all waste from manufacturing, including landscaping with grey water
  • Making a vegan product, no animal or animal byproducts used

Angelique has always been a staunch supporter of environmentally friendly products, so Ipanema is a perfect fit. We now have a variety of colors and styles in women’s and men’s styles. Check a few of them out here:

The Heavy Metals Collection

Colleen Daly Block has been collecting shells and beach glass for years, roaming the shores of the Big Island of Hawai’i and Kaua’i. One year she created jewelry with her found treasures and gave them as Christmas presents. From there requests were made, and a business was born.

Peace of Kaua’i jewelry started in 2010. Colleen and her husband Joshua collect and snorkel for shells, and Colleen, who is self-taught, designs and create earrings, bracelets, rings and necklaces, which have been a huge hit at the atelier for months now. “Angie’s shop is one of my best sellers,” Colleen said.

Angelique and Colleen recently collaborated to create an exclusive line for the shop, called the “Heavy Metals” Collection. Angelique asked Colleen about the possibility of using Tahitian pearls with sterling silver to create an “edgy” line of jewelry. “I had never thought of Tahitian pearls as edgy before,” Colleen said, but quickly understood and brought the vision to fruition. The Heavy Metals Collection consists of earrings and interlocked bangles made of thick gauge sterling silver and Tahitian pearls.

10% of all Peace of Kaua’i proceeds are donated to the Kaua’i YWCA Sexual Assault Treatment Program. Colleen has worked as a sex assault therapist at the YWCA on Kaua’i since 2009, working with offenders, victims and their family members. Her shell searching on beaches is a way to relieve the stress of her job. ”It’s definitely an outlet for self-care,” she said. “I focus on that and let everything else go.”

Spotlight on Isa

Isa has has been designing and sewing at A Ell Atelier since the Year of the Ox. That’s how she remembers it, because she is an Ox and it was her year of opportunity. Now four years later in the Snake year, Isa continues to create with comrade Angelique.

“I love working with Angie,” Isa said. “When we work together, we problem-solve, we trade ideas back and forth; it’s a wonderful collaboration.”

Isa sews for the A Ell Wedding line, including the hemp silk skirts, the much-coveted corsets, tulle pieces, as well as works on the design and construction of custom dresses. She also sews a variety of knits made with stretchy and soft bamboo, hemp and soy fabrics.

But it’s the Stained Glass collection she loves working on the most. Made from scrap remnants of fabric, Isa picks a color pallette of 3-5 colors and makes a one-of-a-kind piece from it. “There’s no pattern; sometimes they are flowy, sometimes they are tight-fitting,” she said. “When I’m making these I never know what’s going to happen, it just organically forms.”

Isa is working on a fresh batch of the Stained Glass line this week, which includes skirts and dresses priced from $98-$118. They are not sized but rather the perfect fit for the perfect person, sort of like a match made in eco-fabric fashion heaven.
